Writing in English

24/08/2015

Lately, I have been questioning myself about writing in English:

1. By occasion of the blog's anniversary, I reviewed my own posts. My goal was to identify the posts I enjoy the most, in order to start establishing a purpose for the blog. But it had a secondary effect: I was able to notice plenty of grammar mistakes, which makes me embarrassed on one hand, but quite proud on the other, because one of my purposes to write in English is to recover the fluency I once had and was being lost by lack of use. And being able to spot my own mistakes is a proof of that evolution. Nonetheless, despite this recent editing, I am sure there are plenty of grammar errors remaining on the blog.

2. I wrote a comment on a post that was not clear to the blogger. Not a big deal, but it was a wake-up call: I must be careful with my writing and review it accurately. I don't want to be present on the on-line world making a full of myself.

3. Having resolved to start writing again, wouldn't it make more sense to blog in Portuguese?

4. When I read a Portuguese blog and I spot more than two or three grammar mistakes, I tend to close it and never go back. Yes, grammar issues annoy me.

5. I am aware of the irony here and had these contradictory thoughts in my mind when I stumble upon the following post:

Things that puzzle me ... - IV
I can't understand why someone, who clearly doesn't have a good command of English, would insist on writing on that language.

I felt she was writing to me. She probably doesn't even know my blog, but I had no doubt she was aiming towards me. Maybe I needed to read that? Maybe I should quit?

But then I remembered something Freda wrote on a post comment: that she is impressed that I can write a blog in English as a way to learn a foreign language. This phrase took over my head:

Few things reveal your intellect and your generosity of spirit — the parallel powers of your heart and mind — better than how you give feedback, (...) especially if the work in question leaves something to be desired.

I bookmarked it so that I can keep it in mind when I'm forced to give an opinion about others people's work, but I recognize it here, applied in practice, by a truly great spirit towards my own insufficiencies.

And in the end, I feel most embarrassed by the realisation of my own small spirit (see #4), than by the actual grammar mistakes I make. I do want to write correctly, but most of all I want to be the better person as I can be.

I thought: this could be easier if we just help each other. I once spot a few grammar mistakes in a Portuguese blog that I enjoy very much. My first instinct: write a private e-mail to the blogger explaining the error and the correct way to do it. I quit the idea, unsure of what the reception would be (and who am I to criticise anyway?). But isn't this supposed to be a community? Shouldn't we be helping each other? I would very much enjoy being corrected, so I can improve.

This is why I added the following disclosure on my about page:

English is not my native language, and my English formal training consists of mandatory English classes in my school days, long ago. I blog in English to improve my fluency in the language, meaning that you're witnessing my efforts and evolutions, that will most certainly include some grammar mess-ups. Please excuse those, and feel welcome to correct them out to me. I take good writing seriously and will value the opportunity to learn from you and correct my mistakes.
I mean it. From the heart. I will feel honoured if you do so.

    - tal como tu, praticar a língua;
    - e para que não acontecesse a outros (possíveis visitantes de países distantes...) o que já me aconteceu: encontrar um blog cheio de fotografias maravilhosas mas escrito numa língua daquelas que nem dá para adivinhar uma palavra...

  3. I think it is brilliant that you write in (very fluent) English. If you didn't I wouldn't have found you :)

Excelente reflexão no teu post!

    1. Faz realmente toda a diferença, Fátima.
